Women Leading Well: Breaking Barriers
Marching, social media campaigns and discussions are all helpful in moving gender equity forward. However, without better research, specific action steps that create long-term positive change and a network of leaders that are committed to helping all women rise, it is projected to take more than 100 years for women (Work Economic Forum’s 2017 report) to have gender equity. We can and must do better.
This half-day workshop provides an introduction and overview to key aspects of the barriers that get in the way of women leading, both personally and professionally. The workshop is designed for women working or aspiring to work, in leadership and management roles or for women and men to actively support women in businesses or organizations to lead. The workshop will focus on developing a deeper understanding of the intersection between the unique health and wellbeing challenges women face and how that impacts their ability to lead. It will include information on what research has been done, where we are in moving gender equity forward, and why we need to look at these issues in with more systems thinking, making the connections to break down the barriers. We will discuss actions steps for leaders that can create positive change for the next generation of women. We will also touch on the important role that men play in making positive change for women and include a focus on the inclusion challenges that often are not adequately addressed.
The workshop comprises a combination of interactive group activities, shorts (presentations), and individual exercises aimed towards gaining insight into the impact of leadership styles and approaches. The workshop covers some of the core topics related to women in leadership and management including challenges and opportunities, policy impact, change, leading people and teams, leading in complex environments, and setting personal goals. As time is limited, we will aim to offer initial conversations that will pave the way for further action and allow participants to determine their personal future focus.

Dr. Tausha Robertson, DrPH – GW4W Board Member - Women and Inclusion: What We are Not Talking About. There is common ground for people of all backgrounds, but not enough awareness of the differences that need to be addressed to have the type of inclusion that helps businesses and communities thrive. By having a more strategic approach to inclusion, women from all backgrounds can be at their best and lead from an authentic voice.

Mari Ryan, MBA, MHP, CWP – GW4W Board Member - Women Leading – Where We’ve Been and the Opportunities Ahead. The first known conference about gender equity in the U.S. took place back in 1849. There has been much progress over the last 150 years, and yet basic issues for women like pay equity, health equity, sexual harassment and having equal career opportunities are still major issues for women in the U.S and globally. Looking towards the future, there is good evidence that more women leading can help us have a more sustainable world, but we need better strategy to get us there
